Yesterday I had lunch with a girlfriend, and I was telling her about the journey I’ve embarked on (to live more consciously). I told her I have recently learned that our body products are full of toxins, that I have been doing a lot of research about this and what I’ve learned is shocking, that I think most people are as clueless as I was about it, etc, etc. Her response was “Well good luck with that. I can’t worry about all that stuff. I figure I may as well live it up, cause shoot – we’re all gonna die eventually anyway.”
??? Really? That’s really your outlook on life? “We’re all gonna die anyway”?! Seems a bit pessimistic and defeatist to me. Yes, I’ll give you that – we are all going to die eventually. But that doesn’t mean I am going to make choices and use products and eat things that will harm me. I want my time here to be as healthy and enjoyable as possible! I still feel it’s important to take care of myself, and take care of the environment, and be a good role model for my child. I think the attitude of “screw it, we’re gonna die anyway” is a cop-out people use to excuse and justify reckless behavior.
I get it. Some people think ignorance is bliss. But I believe once you have moved beyond ignorance, it is impossible to go back. I can no longer continue to live the way I have been, and pretend that I do not know the things I have learned. That’s just plain ignorant, and there is nothing blissful about that.
