Natural Deodorant – Strike 1

March 22, 2010

So far I’ve had pretty good luck with most of the healthier body products I’ve tried (reviews will be coming soon). The one area I totally struck out though, is deodorant. Man. Unfortunately, as far as body products go, deodorant is a heavy hitter. We rely on deodorant more than we even realize. Take it from me, when your deodorant is letting you down, nothing else really matters – your lotion, your mouthwash, your perfume – doesn’t matter how good they all smell. Bad body odor trumps all.

The first healthy deodorant I tried is JASON Naturally Fresh Deodorant Stick for Women. The ingredients are 70% organic. It does not contain aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, mineral oil, animal byproducts, or fragrance. It is not tested on animals. Some of the ingredients are: sunflower seed oil, cocoa seed butter, lavender extract, corn starch, witch hazel extract, green tea extract, natural vitamin E, lichen extract, and shea butter. Doesn’t that all sound so natural and healthy and effective?

Well two out of three ain’t bad – except when that one is the effectiveness. While this deodorant offered so much promise, it failed to deliver. The deodorant doesn’t have much of a smell. It doesn’t exactly smell like nothing, there’s definitely something there – not bad, but it’s not as (sickeningly) sweet as some deodorants can be, which is good. It’s a white stick, but goes on clear, and smooth – which is also good. But it just doesn’t work.

I sweat in this deodorant. And I get it – it’s not an antiperspirant, so of course, you are going to perspire more. But my problem is I don’t perspire, or glisten, or glow, or anything else delicate sounding. I SWEAT. So I need a deodorant that works, and this one just didn’t cut it. I have to give it a thumbs down. 😦
