Trader Joe’s Body Products – Review

April 17, 2010

I love Trader Joe’s. I do a lot of my food shopping at Trader Joe’s. I like it because I feel like I don’t have to obsess over ingredient lists as much there, because I know they don’t even sell anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it,  or some of the other ingredients I look out for, like GMOs, or artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. I know they have a (very small) body products section there, but I’ve never used any of it before. But since they are a more health conscious store, and I’m on this journey to live more consciously, I figured I may as well check out some of their personal care products. Plus their pricing is typically very affordable. The two products I tried are Trader Joe’s Moisturizing Cream Shave, and Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash.

The Moisturizing Cream Shave is honey mango, with aloe vera and vitamin E. Yum! It does not contain SLS, propylene glycol, parabens, or any other naughty ingredients. Instead, it contains: organic aloe vera leaf juice, organic matricaria extract, organic lavender extract, organic green tea extract, organic Echinacea extract, and botanical fragrance. It is 100% vegetarian, and cruelty-free. It’s $3.49 for an 8 oz bottle, and it lasts a long time – much longer than the shaving-creams-in-a-can I used to use.

Notice it’s called cream shave, not shaving cream. The consistency is not like typical shaving cream, that leaves a foamy cloud on your legs. It’s more like a shaving lotion, and it goes on almost clear. Now this is fine for me, because I’ve been shaving for a long time so don’t need to see where I’m going. The problem, however, is I recently let my 12 yr old daughter start shaving. She has a hard time with this product, because she needs to see the lines of where she’s already shaved. I would use it again, but am going to have to find something else for her.

Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash is made from essential oils, pure plant & botanical extracts, and natural fragrances. It does not contain alcohol, artificial detergents, artificial color, synthetic perfumes, or synthetic ingredients. It is 100% vegan, and cruelty-free. The ingredients include: coconut oil, olive fruit oil, organic tea tree oil, chamomile flower extract, goldenseal root extract, awapuhi root extract, bladderwrack extract, palmarosa oil, petigrain leaf oil, lavender oil, and peppermint oil. It is $5.49 for an 8 oz bottle, and a little goes a long way.

Now for the down side. It is very runny. The consistency is almost watery. There is no kind of creaminess to it at all. I didn’t realize this when I first started using it, so would go to squirt some in the palm of my hand, only to have it run all over the place. But the bigger issue is… it STINKS! This face wash does not smell good to me at all! I hate to deter people from trying it, because it is full of good, natural ingredients, and is very affordable as well. I would say “Maybe it’s just me”, only my daughter thinks it stinks too. In fact, she refuses to use it. We had to buy her a separate face wash. Sadly, I will not be a loyal customer of this product. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Okay, so immediately after reading this blog I saw a commercial on TV about a new product line by Neutrogena. It’s called Neutrogena Naturals. The commercial highlights the fact that it is Pure, Safe, and Effective. If contains “NO” harsh chemical sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals, dyes, or phthalates. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this product.

Thanks for sharing this product line! I hadn’t heard of it, so had to look it up, and I gotta say – it does sound pretty good. It does not contain any of the typical toxins (sulfates, propylene glycol, parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, or dyes), and the packaging is made of post-consumer recycled material. Their website says they’ve made the choice to use “pure, safe ingredients that are naturally derived” (at least in this line).

However, the line does contain fragrance. Fragrance is a tricky ingredient because it can contain any combination of over 3,000 synthetic chemicals. The fragrance industry is not regulated by the FDA, and according to a study conducted by the Environmental Working Group, approx. 66% of chemicals used in fragrance have not even been tested for safety, and others are known neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors, and carcinogens. (See ‘Body Products Are Full of Toxins?’) So fragrance is also an ingredient you want to avoid.

But I will say this is a step in the right direction, and I think it’s a good sign that Neutrogena has felt the need to create a more natural line. Clearly they are feeling the pressure to offer healthier products. This is an example of how consumers can flex their purchasing power! But if you are Neutrogena-loyal, this is the way to go.
