Two months ago I had lunch with a friend and was telling her about my journey to live more consciously. I was telling her how I learned that our body products are full of toxins. Her response was that she can’t be bothered to worry about all that, because “we’re all gonna die anyway.” (See the blog post by the same name.) She also told me that while I may be able to find healthier alternatives to body care products like lotion, deodorant, and toothpaste, I would not be able to find healthy hair care products, and “good luck with that”. (The more I think about it, this friend is quite the Debbie Downer!) Well fortunately she was wrong.
I did some research, found several natural hair care product lines to try, and have been able to find numerous products that work for me. I have very curly hair, and so like an array of products – from mousse to gel – depending on if I want to wear my hair down, or slicked back in a ponytail. The following brands/products are what I am using now:
- Giovanni Organic Hair Care: Giovanni formulas include herbs, nutrients, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential oils. Their ingredients are certified organic, do not include animal byproducts, and are cruelty-free. I use Natural Mousse Air-Turbo Charged Hair Styling Foam ($8.49 for 7 oz), Root 66 Max Volume Directional Root Lifting Spray ($8.99 for 8.5 oz), & L.A. Hold Hair Spritz ($7.99 for 5.1 oz). They have a wide range of products, for all hair types, but this combo of mousse/root booster/hair spray works great for me. (www.giovannicosmetics.com)
- JASON: JASON believes that nature has provided an abundance of plants and herbs that are rich in enzymes, proteins, vitamins and minerals, that have been used in the care of the body and hair for centuries. Their products are SLS, paraben, and animal byproduct free. They do not test on animals. I use Volumizing Mousse – Kiwi & Apricot ($8.99 for 7 oz), Volumizing Root Boost – Kiwi & Apricot ($7.99 for 6.7 oz), and Finishing Spray – Aloe Vera & Bergamot ($6.49 for 6.7 oz). This is another mousse/root booster/hair spray combo that works great for my hair. I rotate back and forth between this and my Giovanni products. (www.jason-natural.com)
- Alba Botanica: Alba Botanica products contain herbal extracts, plant proteins, and botanical oils. They do not contain SLS, parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, silicones, or fragrance. Their ingredients are 100% vegetarian, and they do not test on animals. I use their Soft Hold Style Cream Advanced Botanical Color Protection ($8.95 for 4 oz), which is an excellent styling cream. - Burt’s Bees: Burt’s Bees products do not contain sulfates, parabens, phthalates, or petrochemicals. They do not test on animals. They have a Natural Skin Care For Men line, from which I use the Hair Gel ($7.99 for 4 oz). (Not sure why they think only men want hair gel!) This gel is awesome. It holds every hair in place. The packaging is made from 35% post-consumer content. (www.burtsbees.com)
Now in life I don’t always need to be right, but in this case, I’m glad my friend was wrong. There are multiple healthy hair care product lines out there. I found all of my current products between the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op and Whole Foods, but some can also be found at CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walmart.
