‘The Story of Stuff’ Video

July 30, 2010

Last week I shared a video called The Story of Cosmetics: The Ugly Truth of “Toxins In, Toxins Out”, which is about both the environmental and personal harms that are caused by the cosmetics industry. The video was created by activist Annie Leonard, and her team, The Story of Stuff Project. I poked around their website for a bit, and then watched the first video they made, that really started it all – The Story of Stuff.

This video is about the effects of our culture of overconsumption and waste. I knew it wasn’t going to be a good story, but was still stunned by some of the information. For example, did you know that if every country consumed at U.S. rates, we would need 3-5 planets? And that only 1% of the materials produced in our current system are still in use six months later? Which means that 99% is trashed! Oink. Not good. Really made me think about how I contribute to this system.
