Propylene Glycol in Bread?!

About a month and a half ago I wrote about how I bought a package of trail mix, and was shocked to see parabens listed in the ingredients. I knew parabens were used as preservatives in conventional cosmetics, but had no clue they were ever used in food. I was shocked, because it is one of the ingredients I have been diligent about avoiding in my body products, but here I was EATING IT! Well the same thing happened today. I was in the bread aisle, and grabbed a loaf that has propylene glycol in it. Waaa?

Just like with parabens, I had no idea propylene glycol was even used in food. I had to look it up, and apparently it’s used as a dough strengthener, which is why I assume it was in the bread I saw. But to be honest, I don’t really care why it’s used. All I know is, I don’t want to be eating it. And the only reason I grabbed the bread is because the package says it’s 100% whole wheat, so I ASSumed it would be healthy! Just reiterates how important it is to read ingredient lists, and to familiarize ourselves with what certain ingredient items even are in the first place.
