Cell Phones – It’s Even Worse Than I Thought

A few days ago I wrote about how my daughter wants a cell phone, and as part of my explanation of why she cannot have one, I did a bunch of research to show her how the accompanying radiation is extremely harmful for kids. Well at the end of typing that post, I realized that while I had just finished writing about cell phone radiation dangers, and how to protect yourself if you do have a cell phone, I was writing it on my laptop, using my wireless internet connection, and probably exposing myself that way too! So today I was going to write about the harms of wi-fi, but in researching that topic, I keep coming across worse and worse data regarding cell phones, so wanted to write another piece.

In ‘Is My Cell Phone Cooking My Brain?’, I wrote that I learned cell phone radiation permeates adults skulls 2″, 10 yr olds skulls 5″, and 5 yr olds skulls 8″![1] I also learned that men are advised not to keep their cell phone in their pocket, or wear it on their belt, as this may contribute to reduced sperm counts.[2] But it gets worse.

This is what I’ve learned in the past few days:

    • The combination of wireless technology and devices has dramatically increased our daily exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF).[3]
    • Research Professor Martin Blank, PhD, says the human body is sensitive to EMF in the environment. He claims it effects DNA, the brain (‘Is My Cell Phone Cooking My Brain?’), and that it may lead to Alzheimer’s, dementia, and breast cancer.[4]
    • Reba Goodman, PhD, (Columbia University) reports that EMF exposure causes DNA to produce a biochemical stress response.[5]
    • David Carpenter, MD, Director of the University of Albany, Institute of Health and the Environment, says “The existing FCC and international limits do not do enough to protect people, especially children, from daily exposures to electromagnetic fields and radio-frequency radiation. The existing safety limits did not anticipate these new kinds of technologies affecting the health of people living with and using wireless devices on a daily basis. These effects are now widely reported to occur at exposure levels significantly below most current national and international limits.”[6]
    • Oncologist, researcher, and brain tumor specialist Dr. Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, says “The evidence for risks from prolonged cell phone and cordless phone use is quite strong. For people who have used these devices for 10 years or longer, and when they are used mainly on one side of the head, the risk of malignant brain tumor is doubled for adults and is even higher for persons with first use before the age of 20 years.”[7]
    • Wildlife biologist Alfonso Balmori, PhD, believes electromagnetic radiation is a form of pollution, which may hurt both plants and animals.[8]
    • Prolonged exposure to radio-frequency and microwave radiation from cell phones, cordless phones, cell towers, WI-FI and other wireless technologies has been linked to interference with short-term memory and concentration, sleep disruption, headache and dizziness, fatigue, immune disruption, skin rashes and changes in cardiac function.[9]
    • In 2007, The BioInitiative Working Group – an international working group of scientists, researchers, and public health policy professionals – conducted a report on electromagnetic fields and health. The report shows serious concerns about daily levels of EMF exposure from power lines, cell phones, and many other sources. The report concluded that current standards for public safety are inadequate, and urged government officials to establish new limits.[10]
    • The parts of the body that are the most susceptible to the effects of cell phone radiation are the eyes, breasts, testicles, kidneys & liver (if worn on the belt), and the abdomen of pregnant women.[11]
    • Amniotic fluid does not protect embryos/fetuses from radiation emissions.[12]
    • Soft tissue and internal organs are susceptible to effects of radiation.[13]
    • Metal picks up and amplifies radiation, so using a cell phone while wearing wire-rimmed glasses or braces, is even more harmful.[14]

The long and short of it is, the effects of cell phone radiation aren’t good. I was freaked out enough when I learned that the radiation penetrates deep into children’s skulls, and that it may lead to brain tumors and/or cancer. But as if that weren’t bad enough, I have now learned that in addition to that, the electromagnetic radiation we are surrounded by may also contribute to Alzheimer’s, dementia, breast cancer, cataracts, reduced sperm count, changes in DNA, problems with short-term memory and concentration, sleep disruption, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, immune disruption, skin rashes, and cardiac problems??? Oy vey! Enough already! It’s all too much.

The real problem here is that billions of people, all over the world, have cell phones and wireless internet. So even if I cancel my services, I am still getting nuked by the tower that is transmitting to my neighbors that are stacked all around me in this apartment complex, to the people that are using their cell phones around me in their cars, to the patrons sitting near me in my local coffee shop, etc, etc. Catch my drift? We are virtually living in an electromagnetic soup. Oink. But there are steps that you can take to protect yourself (and your family). Now I know some of these sound pretty ridiculous. I am not expecting people to do all of these, nor am I saying I will be doing these myself. But I do want to share what I have learned. After all, isn’t that the purpose of this blog?

The most effective steps you can take to reduce your exposure to EMF are: go back to corded phones, go back to hard-wired internet, and listen to music from your iPod, CD or tape, instead of the radio. (I know, I can practically hear you scoffing from here.) If you are not willing to do these things, many of the articles/reports/studies I read had a very similar set of guidelines: limit your cell phone use to emergency calls and very short-length calls, do not use your cell phone when it only has a few bars (as the phone is pulling in more radiation to get you service), do not use your cell phone in a moving vehicle (since it pulls in radiation even more frequently when it has to keep searching for a new mast), use your cell phone in speaker-phone mode whenever possible, do not charge your cell phone on your nightstand at night, limit contact of minors with cell phones, do not keep cell phones in your pocket or on your belt, do not use cell phones when pregnant. Oh, and do not stand in front of the microwave.
