The Beautiful Truth – Documentary

September 18, 2010

I just finished watching a documentary I’d like to share with you – The Beautiful Truth, by Steve Kroschell. The description for the movie reads: “After the unexpected and tragic death of his mother, 15-year old Garrett, who is an animal-loving teenager, was spiraling downward and fast. His father withdrew Garrett to be home-schooled to avoid flunking out. Growing up on an Alaskan animal reserve, Garrett’s father recognized his son’s interest in the dietary habits of their animals. That prompted him to assign a book written by Dr. Max Gerson, which maintains that there is a direct link between diet and a cure for cancer. Fascinated and curious, Garrett embarks on a cross-country road trip to investigate the merits of The Gerson Therapy. He meets with scientists, doctors and cancer survivors who reveal how the multi-billion dollar medical industry has made it their mission to dismiss the notion of alternative and natural cures.”

Now I fully believe that diet has a powerful impact on health. You are what you eat. I believe a lot of health ailments and diseases can be attributed to poor diet. Even with that mindset though, I was shocked to learn that over 80 years ago, a doctor, Max Gerson, formulated a diet and treatment plan that can, and has, cured any number of diseases – including cancer. This documentary blew me away.

Here are some interesting factoids from The Beautiful Truth:

  • Max Gerson found a cure for cancer in 1928.
  • The Gerson Therapy cures migraines, diabetes, TB, muscular dystrophy, cancer, & heals heart arteries, among other things.
  • In July 1946, ABC news commentator Raymond Graham Swing testified about validity of the Gerson Therapy. The broadcast resulted in his firing due to pressure from both the pharmaceutical & American medical establishment.
  • MSG is strongly connected to the growth of cancer. It makes cancer grow faster & more invasive.
  • 60% of processed foods contain MSG, but aren’t labeled as such. The only way to avoid MSG is to avoid buying processed foods.
  • The FDA has admitted that genetically altering food can make it toxic.
  • Irradiation of food doesn’t just kill bacteria (which it is used for), but it also molecularly changes the food. It creates free radicals, which have been linked to creating cancer.
  • Pharmaceutical drugs, MSG, aspartame, vaccines, food irradiation, GMOs, dental amalgams, & water fluoridation are all bad for health.
  • Uncooked food has more energy than cooked/pasteurized food. Organically grown food has more energy than conventionally grown food.
  • The pancreas has 2 jobs – to digest food & protect the body from malignant cells. When it is overwhelmed by processing animal product, it can no longer protect the body and the immune system becomes paralyzed.
  • The American Cancer Society is the wealthiest nonprofit in the world, yet they get the lowest rankings in charity evaluations every year. Aside from high salaries & overhead, most of what is left in budget goes into research that benefits pharmaceutical & radiological companies.
  • Betsy Heilman had stage 4 extra-ovarian primary peritoneal carcinoma. No one had ever survived this diagnosis using orthodox treatment. She tried the Gerson Therapy as a last ditch effort. It worked. Her doctor, Dr. Rao, said she is the only patient the Mayo Clinic has seen survive from this. He was willing to appear on camera attesting that the Gerson diet saved her life. The Mayo Clinic told him they would never allow him to say a patient recovered without chemotherapy. Dr. Rao quit the clinic.
  • “Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.” -Hypocrates

I told one of my brother’s about this documentary, and he was fairly upset by the notion that the medical industry would know that there is a cure for cancer out there, but suppress that knowledge so they could make more money. Because let’s face it, cancer is big business. Between doctor visits, prescriptions, radiation, chemotherapy – there is much money to be made. But I told my brother, I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think doctors are sitting there thinking “Hmmm. Should I tell this patient they can cure their disease with a simple diet? Or have them go through the pain and agony of chemotherapy? Hmmm. Chemo it is!” I think the issue is that most doctors don’t even know about Gerson Therapy. I think they’re not even aware of it. Think about it – they aren’t learning about the Gerson Diet in medical school. They aren’t learning about it on their internship. No one is teaching them about it as they do their rounds. How would they know? Shoot, I wouldn’t know about it if I weren’t on this journey to live more consciously, and hadn’t started watching a bunch of documentaries related to the food we eat, that eventually lead me to The Beautiful Truth.

Now some people are weary of the notion that a particular diet can cure cancer. I think even skeptics can benefit from watching this documentary though. The diet is essentially a vegan diet, plus juicing and raw salads, no animal fat, no salt, and an occassional caffeine enema. (I know. Ugh.) But here’s the reason for the enema: the combination of caffeine and palmitates – chemicals in coffee – work together to stimulate and cleanse the liver and blood. The caffeine and palmitates stimulate and increase the production of a liver enzyme, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), which removes free radicals and cancer cells from the blood stream, and helps the liver detoxify.[1] The combination is quite effective for a body cleanse. And since cancer is linked to free radical damage within cells, it is essential to remove them from the body.[2] Now for the skeptics, here’s my thinking – even if the diet doesn’t work for eliminating and curing diseases like cancer, it is a very healthy diet and will have positive improvement on health. And what’s the harm in that?

Have you read the china study? It made me give up all dairy in all forms. Cancer took my mother when I was 6 and her mother three days later of the same cancer, a brother in his late 30’s and my father had cancer when he died of heart failure. Dairy to me is the biggest health threat we face along with animal products. Anyway, I’m getting carried away 🙂 Just wanted to thank you for your post.

I am so glad you found some value in the post. In January 2010, I embarked on a journey to live more consciously (hence the blog). I read several books, watched a few documentaries, and did a lot of research about diet, and because of what I learned switched to a vegan diet in October. I agree that consuming animal products is the culprit of most ailments and diseases that plague our society. I am so sorry to hear about all the people cancer stole from your family. I think it’s great that you’ve made the choice to take charge of your health! I have not read The China Study, but went to their website and read an excerpt from the book. It sounds like it’s right up my alley. I will add it to my reading list. Thanks for the heads up!
