Dr. Oz on Organic Packaged Food

December 7, 2010

Today Dr. Oz did a show about genetically modified food. One of the segments of this show was about the packaged foods that he thinks we should be buying the organic version of.

These are the four items he discussed:

  • Peanut Butter – He says to buy organic peanut butter, because pesticides are sprayed on peanuts, in order to protect them from mold (they’re susceptible to that). Organic peanuts are kept dry, so mold can’t grow on them. They do not use pesticides.
  • Cereal – He says to buy organic cereal because there are no pesticides, or genetically modified soy or corn products in them.
  • Ketchup – Dr. Oz prefers organic ketchup because researchers have found it has twice the antioxidants of conventional ketchup.
  • Frozen Meals – The organic versions are more beneficial because they contain fewer processed ingredients, which typically results in lower fat and sodium.

He said the organic version of these items is not much more expensive than the standard version, but the health pay-off is well worth the additional cost. So keep these in mind when making your next grocery list!
