Vegan Baker Wins Cupcake Wars!

December 10, 2010

Today I caught a re-run of an episode of Cupcake Wars, from back on June 22, where a vegan baker won for the first time. Her name is Chloe Coscarelli, and the episode was awesome! Vegan chef Chloe is a graduate of The Natural Gourmet Institute of Health and Culinary Arts NYC, the University of California at Berkeley, and Cornell University’s Plant Based Nutrition Program by Dr. T. Colin Campbell (The China Study). She has worked at Millennium Restaurant in SF, Counter Organic Vegetarian Bistro in NYC, and Herbivore Restaurant in Berkeley.

The episode had an aphrodisiac theme, and Chloe won the competition with the following 4 cupcakes: Ginger Nutmeg Spice Cake with vanilla bean-butter cream, date-caramel drizzle, and sweet almond tuile on top; Raspberry Tiramisu, with a raspberried center, and amaretto-espresso frosting; Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake; and Dark Chocolate Orange, with crème filling, and a candied orange peel on top. The cupcakes all looked as delicious as they clearly tasted, considering the judges went on and on about what perfection they were.

But the sweetest tasting part of the show for me, was that one of the traditional bakers – Shannon Noormand – was totally bagging on Chloe the whole time. Towards the start of the episode, she was saying that there were pretty much only three competitors (instead of four), because she knew the vegan baker would get knocked out right away. Then every time the judges raved about Chloe’s cupcakes, she would roll her eyes. By the final round, it was just down to Chloe and Shannon. When Chloe knocked her out in the end, she rolled her eyes, walked off without even congratulating Chloe, said that she should have won, and that it kills her that vegan cupcakes won! It was so classic. She had to eat a big ol’ slice of humble pie, which incidentally, I’m sure would have tasted better had chef Chloe made it. 😉
